The Crazy Crazies

Tonight we went and saw The Crazies at the AMC Newport. It is a remake from George A. Romero's 1973 movie of the same name. I went into it thinking it was a typical zombie movie. No way. A contaminated water supply turns the town into crazies, or murderous hunters. Definitely creepy, with a lot of great moments to make you jump (all were predictable but the jump cannot be stopped). The acting was over-the-top and fit the plot well. There were also a couple laugh-out-loud moments; I believe they were supposed to be dry humor but came off as goofy. Many of the effects make you cringe, but it is contained to blood and awkward wounds. I am not a fan of zombie films, but these aren't your mindless brain-eaters. These crazies are out to kill, not consume. The bioterror spin leads to credibility, while the trigger-happy military adds another level of fear. I've also had a lot of fun playing on the various sites created in promotion of the film.

Overall, another fun movie with chemically-charged killers. I'm glad I didn't pay for it and might not watch it again, save for a fun movie night with popcorn and snide comments.
